Some Common Mistakes in Ramadan


Taking Ramadhaan as a ritual
For many of us Ramadhaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual (Stereotyped behaviour) than a form of Ibaadah. We fast from morning to night like a zombie (living dead) just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that its a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil. We forget to make Dua, forget to beseech Allah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire. Sure we stay away from food and drink, but that’s about all?
Too much stress on food and drink
For some people, the entire month of Ramadhaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Quraan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD so much so that they turn the month of ‘fasting’ into the month of ‘feasting’.
Spending all day cooking
Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray Ishaa, let alone pray Taraweeh or Tahajjud or even read Quraan. This is the month of mercy and forgiveness. Soturn off that stove and turn on your Imaan!
Eating too much
Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor (Sehree) until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to ‘make up for the food missed.’ However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Moderation is the key to everything. The Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air.” (Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah. saheeh by al-Albaani). 

Too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy and also makes the heart heedless.

Sleeping all day
Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) ’sleeping away their fast’. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month? These people also are missing the purpose of fasting and are slaves to their desires of comfort and ease. They cannot ‘bear’ to be awake and face a little hunger or exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing but, negligence on his part.
Wasting time
The month of Ramadhaan is a precious, It is so much precious so that Allah calls this month “Ayyamum Ma’doodaat“ (A fixed number of days). Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music. Subhaan Allah! Trying to obey Allah by DISOBEYING him!
Fasting but not giving up evil
Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allah.

“O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [al-Baqarah 2:183] The Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.” (Bukhaari)

Smoking
Smoking is forbidden in Islam whether during Ramadhaan or outside of it, as it is one of al-Khabaa’ith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of ’smoking material’ eg.cigars, cigarettes, pipes,’Sheesha’, hookah etc.“he allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa’ith (all evil and unlawful things) [al-A’raaf :157]

It is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting ones wealth.
The Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “There should be no harming or reciprocating harm.” This is especially true during fasting and it invalidates the fast.(Fatwa -Ibn ‘Uthaymeen)

Skipping Suhoor (Sehree)
The Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing.”(Bukhaari, Muslim). And he (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “The thing that differentiates between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is eating suhoor.” (Muslim)
Not fasting if they missed Suhoor ( Sehree)
Some people are too scared to fast if they miss Suhoor. However, this is a kind of cowardice and love of ease. What is the big deal if you missed a few morsels of food? It’s not like you will die. Remember, obedience to Allah overcomes everything.
Eating continuously until the time for Maghrib is up
Some people put so much food in their plates when breaking their fast and continue eating, enjoying dessert, drinking tea, etc., until they miss Maghrib. That is obviously not right. The Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) was that once he broke his fast with some dates, then he would hasten to the prayer. Once you are done with the prayer, you can always go back and eat some more if you wish.
Missing the golden chance of having your Dua accepted
The prayer of the fasting person is guaranteed to be accepted at the time of breaking fastThe Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Three prayers are not rejected: the prayer of a father, the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveler.” (al-Bayhaqi, saheeh by al-Albaani). 

Instead of sitting down and making Dua at this precious time, some people forego this beautiful chance, and are too busy frying samosas, talking, setting the food, filling their plates and glasses, etc. Think about it…. Is food more important than the chance to have your sins forgiven or the fulfillment of your Duas?

Fasting but not praying
The fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr.
As the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer.” (Muslim) In fact, NONE of his good deeds will be accepted; rather, they are all annulled.

“Whoever does not pray ‘Asr, his good deeds will be annulled.” (Bukhaari)

Not fasting because of exams or work
Exams or work is NOT one of the excuses allowed by the Shariah to not fast. You can do your studying and revision at night if it is too hard to do that during the day. Also remember that pleasing and obeying Allah is much more important than ‘good grades’. Besides, if you will fulfil your obligation to fast, even if you have to study, Allah will make it easy for you and help you in everything you do.“Whosoever fears Allah, He will appoint for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect, Allah is Sufficient for whosoever puts his trust in Him.” (Surah at-Talaaq 2-3)
Mixing fasting and dieting
DO NOT make the mistake of fasting with the intention to diet. That is one of the biggest mistakes some of us make (esp. sisters). Fasting is an act of worship and can only be for the sake of Allah alone. Otherwise, mixing it with the intention of dieting may become a form of (minor) Shirk.
Praying ONLY on the night of the 27th
Some people pray ONLY on the 27th to seek Lailat ul-Qadr, neglecting all other odd nights, although the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Seek Lailat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadhaan.” (Bukhaari, Muslim). only 27th?
Wasting the last part of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid
Some people waste the entire last 10 days of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid, shopping and frequenting malls, etc. neglecting Ibadah and Lailatul Qadr. although, the Prophet (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to strive the hardest during the last ten days of Ramadhaan in worship(Ahmad, Muslim) and not in shopping. Buy whatever you need for Eid before Ramadhaan so that you can utilize the time in Ramadhaan to the max.Aa’ishah (RA) said: “When the (last) ten nights began, the Messenger of Allah (Sal Allahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam)) would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., strive hard in worship or refrain from intimacy with his wives), stay awake at night and wake his family.” (Bukhaari and Muslim).

Shaytan will never tire out!


Satan has one long term goal. This is his ultimate ambition. This goal is to see humans thrown into the hellfire and prevented from entering paradise. To achieve his goal, Shaytan first lures mankind into committing Shirk and Kufr through invoking dead, practicing magic etc., because Shirk is the greatest sin. Anyone who dies upon Shirk will not be forgiven, nor will he ever be taken out of Hell-fire.

If he cannot manage to deceive people into committing Shirk and Kufr, he does not give up. He causes people to follow bidah (innovations in the religion).  One who sins, knows that he is disobeying Allah and some time, he may turn to Allah and seek forgiveness and be pardoned. But he, who practices Bidah, deems his action to be a form of worship to Allah and thus, never even thinks of repentance!

If Shaytan fails at causing people to follow innovations, he will move on to calling them to major sins. If the believer keeps steadfast, Shaytan is still not discouraged, he calls them to minor sins.

Allah’s Messenger  sallallahu alaihe wassallam warned us concerning minor sins by giving an example of how a great fire can be kindled by means of small wooden sticks collected in a place. Similarly, minor sins if allowed to accumulate, might destroy the sinner.

If the believer still emerges safe from his traps, Shaytan seeks to keep him occupied with permissible matters, like sleeping, eating, pursuing worldly affairs, etc. Spending time and effort in these will neither earn him reward nor bring punishment. He will, however, miss the rewards he would have gained if he had spent his time in performing good deeds.

If the believing slave is still not deceived and manages his time well, Shaytan keeps him busy with less virtuous deeds instead of what is more preferable and rewarding in order for him to miss the reward of the best and most virtuous deed.

If after employing all kinds of temptations and deceptive arguments, Shaytan still does not succeed in diverting the son of Adam from his religious commitments, he resorts to corrupt his acts of worship and deprive him from the rewards. He stirs up doubts and makes the person anxious and uncertain.
If the person still remains undefeated, Shaytan’s next step is to harm the person, for example, by causing him to be persecuted, or by distorting his reputation. By this trick Shaytan intends to discourage the person from his religious commitment.

What we can conclude is that if Satan fails at one stage, he does not give up and keeps trying, and lies in wait along the path of goodness as he had avowed, “… surely I will sit and wait against them on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones.” Surah al-A’raf 16-17.

A Touchy Poem…that made Imam Ahmad cry!


If my Lord asks me, “Have you (any) shyness in disobeying me?


You conceal your sins from my creation – and with sins you come to me.” 


So how will I answer? O woe to me – and who shall protect me? 


I keep averting my soul with thoughts of hope – from time to time.


And I forget what is to come after death – and what is to come after I am shrouded. 


As if I am guaranteed life (eternally) – and that death will not come to me.


And when the severe stupor of death overtakes me – who will protect me? 


I looked at the faces; is there not from amongst them who will ransom me? 

 
I will be asked regarding what I have prepared in my life to save me (on the Day of Judgement).


Then how will I answer – after I have neglected my religion.


Woe to me! Did I not hear the Speech of Allāh inviting me?


Did I not hear what came in (the chapters of) Qāf and Yā-Sīn? 


Did I not hear about the Day of Gathering, the Day of Assemble and the Day of Judgement? 

 
Did I not hear the crier of death inviting me, calling me? 


So O my Lord, a slave (turning to you) I have repented – so who then shall shelter me? 


Except a Lord extensive in forgiveness – to the truth He will guide me. 


I have come to you (in repentance) – so have mercy on me, and make heavy my scales (with good deeds). 


And lighten my account – You are the best of who will bring me to account.

Ten Lessons Ibn al-Mubarak Taught Us Translated by Brother Abu Sabaya


‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak was a scholar known for simultaneously combining numerous traits of virtue. In fact, his friends would sit and count all of the good things that were part of his character and personality. adh-Dhahabi related that they said: “Let’s sit and count the good traits that Ibn al-Mubarak has.” So, they ended up listing: “Knowledge, Fiqh, literature, grammar, language, zuhd, eloquence, poetry, praying at night, worship, Hajj, Jihad, bravery, instinct, strength, speaking little in what doesn’t concern him, fairness, and lack of conflict with his companions.”

Reading through his life story, one sees exactly this and cannot help but to derive brief yet heavy lessons from how this man lived:

1- No matter how bad you think you are, you can always become better.

In ‘Tartib al-Madarik’ (1/159), al-Qadi ‘Iyad mentioned that Ibn al-Mubarak was asked about the circumstances in which he began studying. He replied: “I was a youth who drank wine and loved music and singing while engaging in these filthy acts. So, I gathered some friends to one of my gardens where there were sweet apples, and we ate and drank until we passed out while drunk. At the end of the night, I woke up and picked up the stringed oud and began singing:
Isn’t it time that you had mercy on me * And we rebel against those who criticize us?

And I was unable to pronounce the words as I intended. When I tried again, the oud began speaking to me as if it were a person, saying the verse: {“Isn’t it time for the hearts of those who believe to be affected by Allah’s reminder?”} [al-Hadid; 16] So, I said: “Yes, O Lord!” And I smashed the oud, spilled the wine, and my repentance with all its realities came by the grace of Allah, and I turned towards knowledge and worship.”

2 – You should associate with honorable people.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/323), Ibn al-Jawzi mentioned: “Ibn al-Mubarak’s home in Marw was vast. It measured fifty square yards. There was no person known for knowledge, worship, manhood, or high status in Marw except that you saw him in this house.”

3 – You should be a helpful guest.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/324), it is narrated that when an-Nadr bin Muhammad’s son got married, he invited Ibn al-Mubarak, “and when he arrived, Ibn al-Mubarak got up to serve the guests. an-Nadr did not leave him and swore that he would tell him to leave until he finally sat down.”

4 – You should give money to the poor.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/327), Ibn al-Jawzi mentions that Ibn al-Mubarak “would spend a hundred thousand dirhams a year on the poor.”

5 – You should always return borrowed items to their owners.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/329), al-Hasan bin ‘Arafah said that ‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak told him: “I borrowed a pen from someone in Sham, and I intended to return it to its owner. When I arrived in Marw (in Turkmenistan!), I saw that I still had it with me. Abu ‘Ali (al-Hasan’s nickname), I went all the way back to Sham to return the pen to its owner!”

6 – You should be brave, and hide your good deeds:

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/329), ‘Abdah bin Sulayman said: “We were on an expedition in the lands of the Romans with ‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak. We met the enemy, and when the two armies met, a man came out from their side calling for a duel. One of our men went out to him and dueled with him for an hour, injuring him and killing him. Another came out, and he killed him. He called for another duel, and another man came out. They dueled for an hour, and he injured and killed him as well. The people gathered around this man, and I was with them, and saw that he was covering his face with his sleeve. I took the edge of his sleeve and pulled it away to find that it was ‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak,” and in the version reported by adh-Dhahabi, he made him swear not to reveal his identity until the day he died.

7 – You should have a tender heart.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/330), al-Qasim bin Muhammad said: “We were on a journey with Ibn al-Mubarak, and I was always asking myself: what is so special about this man that he is so famous? If he prays, so do we. If he fasts, so do we. If he fights, so do we. If he makes Hajj, so do we.

One night, we spent the night in a house travelling on the way to Sham. The lamp went out, and some of us woke up. So, he took the lamp outside to light it, and stayed outside for a while. When he came back in with the lamp, I caught a glimpse of Ibn al-Mubarak’s face, and saw that his beard was wet with his tears. I said to myself: “This fear of Allah is what has made this man better than us. When the lamp went out and we were in darkness, he remembered the Day of Resurrection.””

8 – You should be generous to your friends.

In ‘Sifat as-Safwah’ (2/329), Isma’il bin ‘Ayyash said: “I don’t know of a single good trait except that Allah has placed it in ‘Abdullah bin al-Mubarak. My friends told me that they were travelling with him from Egypt to Makkah, and he was serving them khabis (a sweet flour dish) while he was fasting the entire trip.”

9 – You should not give in to Satan’s whispers.

In ‘Tartib al-Madarik’ (1/159), it is related that Ibn al-Mubarak was making ablution, and Satan came to him and said: “You did not wipe over this part of your body.” Ibn al-Mubarak said: “I did.” Satan said: “No, you didn’t.” So, Ibn al-Mubarak said: “You are the one making the claim, and you must therefore bring proof to back the claim up.”

10 – You should sincerely pray for people to accept Islam.

In ‘Tartib al-Madarik’ (1/162), it is related that al-Hasan bin ‘Isa bin Sirjis would walk by Ibn al-Mubarak, and he was a Christian. Ibn al-Mubarak asked who he was, and was told: “He is a Christian.” So, Ibn al-Mubarak said: “O Allah, grant him Islam.” So, Allah answered his supplication and al-Hasan became an excellent Muslim, and he travelled to seek knowledge and became one of the scholars of the Ummah.”

About Third Kalimah..Tumjeed


The third kalimah has a unique and very interesting story behind it. It all started before Allah Ta’alah created Adam A.S. The Angels were trying to move the Arsh (Throne) of Allah Ta’alah but it was too heavy and wouldn’t budge. So they asked Almighty Allah for help. Allah told them to recite “Subhanallah.” The Angels did as they were told and found that it gave them power and strength and they were able to move the Arsh. They liked this so much that they began constantly hymning “Subhanallah.”- (Glory be to Allah)

Then Allah created Adam A.S. When Allah blew life into Adam, the first thing he did was sneeze and say “Alhamdulillah” (All parise be to Allah)The angels liked this act so much that they added this to their parise and glorification of Allah. Thus the kalimah became “Subhanallah Walhamdulillah”

Hundreds of years passed and the Prophet Nooh A.S. was now on earth. For nine hundred years he proclaimed the oneness of Allah with the words “La illaha illalah.” (There is none worthy of worhip The Angels loved this act so much that they added this to the kalimah. Thus, the kalimah now became “Subhanallah Walhamdulillah Wa La illaha illalah.”
The Angels kept repeating this kalimah day and night. Many centuries passed and the Prophet Ebrahim A.S. (Abraham) was asked by Almighty Allah to sacrifice his beloved son Ismaeel A.S. He was about to slaughter his son and He needed something to give him the courage he needed to do this difficult deed. So he recited “Allahu Akbar.” (Allah is Great).
The Angels loved this act so much that they added “Allahu Akbar” to the kalimah. Thus the kalimah became “Subhanallah Walhamdulillah Wa La illaha illalah Allahu Akbar.” More centuries passed. It was the night of Meraj, when our Beloved Prophet Muhammed S.A.W. ascended to the Heavens with Gibraeel A.S. There Gibraeel A.S. told Nabee S.A.W. the story and Nabee S.A.W. added the final part of the Kalmiah “Wala Howla Wa La Quwata Illah Billah Hil Aleyeel Azeem.” Thus the kalimah now became Subhanallah Walhamdulillah Wa La illaha illalah Allahu Akbar Wala Howla Wa La Quwata Illah Billah Hil Aleyeel Azeem” (There is no Power and Might except from Allah, The Most High, The Great) And up to this day, this kalimah (or declaration of faith) buzzes around the Arsh of Almighy Allah.
Third Kalima is Tumjeed, this is the Kalima(the first part) that is recited 33 times after each Farz Namaaz, and is called tasbih Fatima.
Surah Fatiha protects one from the anger of Allah.
Surah Yaseen from the thirst of the Day of Judgement.
Sura Waaqiah from poverty and starvation
Surah Mulk from the punishment of the grave
Surah Kausar from the enemity of the enemy
Surah Kaafiroon from kufr at the time of death
Surah Ikhlaas from hypocrisy
Surah Falaq from calamities.
Surah Naas from evil thoughts

Hazrat Muhammad S.A.W. (PBUH) says that “If a person recites ” Ayatal Kursi” after every Farz Namaz then there will be nothing between him and Heaven except Death”There is a Hadith that says “3rd kalima” is such a great medicine that it cures every disease and the most minor disease it cures is “Sorrow” (Gham).
Third kalima being:  ” Subhaan Allah, WalHamdo Lillah, Wa La Illaha IlAllah, Wa Aallah o Akbar. Wa Lahoalwalla quwatta illa billah hil Ali al Azeem.” Another Hadith says “if a person recites surah ikhlaas 10 times in a day then Allah build a palace for him in the Heaven.(Subhaan Allah)” and the last but not the least ALLAH says ” spread the knowledge whatever u have …Its duty of each and every Muslim”
May ALLAH accepts our good deeds (Insha-Allah)  Ameen…….

Nine Super Benefits of Quran recitation


Indeed to reflect on Allah’s verses is a form of worship that will draw one close to Allah Most High. This reflection is not a reckless and wandering one, rather it includes a study of the classical tafseer of the verses being pondered over, as this would fulfil Ibnul-Qayyim’s great advice, “Such as reflecting over a book which a person has memorised and he expounds it so that he may understand what its author intends by it.”

Indeed the Book of Allah is not a book like any other, it is the timeless Speech of Allah, not a created thing, the study guide for life and death and what comes after. Therefore it deserves a more careful study than anyone else’s speech. It necessitates that its reader return to the early narrations of those who witnessed its revelation and heard its explanation by the one deputed by Allah to rehearse and explain His Words to humanity (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam). For if one would try to ponder over the meanings of the verses without having done this study, then surely the filth of the time that he lives in and his ignorance of the correct application and understanding that the early Muslims had would cause him to understand some things not intended by Allah Most High, and therefore he would go astray, thinking to be worshipping Allah. So every sincere Muslim who hopes to earn Allah’s Love breciting and reflecting over Allah’s Book, then let him hold tight to the meanings explained by the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam), and those taught by the companions and their immediate followers, and the early scholars of Islam.

So dear brother and sister Muslim! Know that reciting and pondering over the Book of Allah, devoting your time regularly to its study and implementation has tremendous benefits in this life and the Next, so let us now look to just a few of them to attach ourselves more firmly to Allah’s Majestic Words. Each benefit stands as enough of an encouragement to shun any laziness we have and dedicate ourselves to the Qur’an.

1 – Reading and reflecting over the Qur’an fulfils an Islamic duty.
Indeed the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) summarised this Religion with his statement: “The Religion is naseehah (sincerity)!” So then Tameem ibn Aws, may Allah be pleased with him, then said, “We asked, `To whom?'” He said: “To Allah, HIS BOOK, His Messenger, the leaders of the people, and their common folk.” [Muslim] The sincerity that is due to the Book of Allah includes its regular recitation, learning the rules of tajweed and reciting it beautifully, learning about its tafseer and the reasons for its revelation, affirming that it is the Truth, the perfect Speech of Allah and not part of the creation, honoring it and defending it, abiding by the orders and prohibitions found in it, teaching it and calling to it. [See Jaami’ul-‘Uloom wal-Hikam of Ibn Rajab Al-Hambalee] So by reading and reflecting over the Qur’an, one fulfills an obligation and is rewarded for that. Upon fulfilling this obligation, the Qur’an then becomes a proof for him on the Day of Judgment! And that is our second benefit we will take by embracing this Noble Book…

2 – The Qur’an will be a proof for us on the Day of Judgment.
This is due to the statement of the Messenger: “And the Qur’an is a proof for you or against you.” [Muslim] So one of two things will occur with this proof, the Book of Allah. It will either be in your favor, a proof for you on the Day when you will need every single good deed, or it will be something standing against you, the very Speech of your Creator, a proof against you! Who could be saved from the terrors of that Day if Allah’s own Speech is against him?!?! Think carefully, dear Muslim brother or sister, about your position with the Qur’an! Are you neglecting it, contradicting it, being heedless of its orders and prohibitions, are you thinking deeply over it?! Will it be on your side on the Day of Judgment.?! O Allah! We ask you, by Your Glorious Speech and the rest of your beautiful Names and Attributes, to make the Qur’an a proof for us! O Allah! Don’t make the Qur’an a proof against us on that Day, and save us from the hellfire! For if Allah makes the Qur’an a proof in our favour on that Day, then it would also be an intercessor for us, when NO intercession will take place except by His Permission.

3 – The Qur’an will intercede for us on the Day of Judgment.
The proof: Aboo Umaamah relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: “Read the Qur’an, for verily it will come on the Day of Standing as an intercessor for its companions.” [Muslim]

4 – Your status in this life will be raised.
In Saheeh Muslim, we find a lovely story, about how a man from the people of Jannah, `Umar ibn Al-Khattaab, understood this principle. Some men came to question him during his khilaafah about the leadership of Makkah, they asked, “Who do you use to govern Makkah?” He said, “Ibn Abzaa.” They asked, “And who is Ibn Abzaa?” Umar replied, “A freed slave from those we freed.” They remarked, “You left a freed slave in charge of the people of the Valley (the noble tribes of the Quraysh)!?!?” So he answered them, “Verily he is a reader of the Book of Allah and is knowledgeable about the obligations of the Muslims. Haven’t you heard the statement of your Messenger: “Verily Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others by it.”

5 – You will be from the best of the people.
`Uthmaan, may Allah be pleased with him, said that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: “The best of you are the ones who learn the Qur’an and teach it to others” [Al-Bukhari]

6 – There are ten rewards for each letter you recite from the Qur’an.
As an authentic hadith in At-Tirmithee proves: “Whoever reads a letter from the Book of Allah, he will have a reward. And that reward will be multiplied by ten. I am not saying that “Alif, Laam, Meem” is a letter, rather I am saying that “Alif” is a letter, “laam” is a letter and “meem” is a letter.” So increase your recitation of the Qur’an to gain these merits, and to gain the following merit as well.

7 – The reciters of the Qur’an will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels.
`Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, relates that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said: “Verily the one who recites the Qur’an beautifully, smoothly, and precisely, he will be in the company of the noble and obedient angels. And as for the one who recites with difficulty, stammering or stumbling through its verses, then he will have TWICE that reward.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

So dear respected sister in Islam, do not let the Shaytaan give you false excuses, such as “I am not an `Arab,” or “Its not my language.” This hadith is a firm proof against these whisperings. Dedicate yourself to the Book of Allah, whether you are an `Arab or not! The excuses have been eliminated and the pathway has been cleared for you to embrace the Book of Allah without holding back or offering excuses! And surely you will not hesitate to seek a teacher or a study circle for the Qur’an once you hear the last and perhaps greatest benefits of reading and contemplating over the Qur’an…

8 – Your position in Paradise is determined by the amount of Qur’an you memorize in this life!
`Abdullaah ibn `Amr ibn Al-‘Aas heard the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) saying: “It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Read and elevate (through the levels of the Paradise) and beautify your voice as you used to do when you were in the dunyaa! For verily, your position in the Paradise will be at the last verse you recite!” [Aboo Daawood and At-Tirmithee, saheeh]

9 – The Qur’an will lead you to Paradise!
The Prophet said: “The Qur’an is an intercessor, something given permission to intercede, and it is rightfully believed in. Whoever puts it in front of him, it will lead him to Paradise; whoever puts it behind him, it will steer him to the Hellfire.” [An authentic hadith found in At-Tabaraanee, on the authority of `Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood]

Now that you know these nine benefits from the many benefits available can only be attained by a sincere commitment to the Book of Allah, not by a person’s mere statement, “I love the Qur’an, it’s beautiful.” Rather the heart must be sincerely attached to Allah’s Book and the limbs and tongue will follow in this attachment. You must know that we only mentioned a few of the numerous benefits of reading and reflecting over the Qur’an. There are many benefits that await your reading in the Qur’an and books of hadith, like the chapter of the Qur’an that will argue on your behalf in the grave, and that it is a physical healing, a source of rest and relaxation for your heart, among many other things. A Believer’s Attitude During Fitnah


TIMES are difficult. Peace and security are scarce and fleeting. Humankind frequently suffers tribulations such as natural disasters, war and tyrannical rulers. Social and economic problems such as unemployment, divorce, permissive youth culture, terrorism, rampant crime and lack of education and morality, abound.
However, out of all problems, dissension, division and discord seem to rule the roost.
Ibn Al-A’rabi summed up the meanings of fitnah when he said: “Fitnah means testing, fitnah means trial, fitnah means wealth, fitnah means children, fitnah means kufr, fitnah means differences of opinion among people, fitnah means burning with fire.” (Lisan Al-‘Arab by Ibn Manzoor)
During fitnah, a Muslim is often left confused about what to do; how to keep despair at bay and remain hopeful; whose side to take during a conflict, and who to blame or condemn? The haqq (truth) becomes blurry with baatil (falsehood).
Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) prophesied the onslaught of fitan near the end of time, i.e. when mankind will be in its last part. He said: “Time will pass quickly, good deeds will decrease, miserliness will be thrown (in people’s hearts), fitan will appear, and there will be much Al-Haraj.” The Sahabah (Companions) enquired, “O Messenger of Allah! What is Al-Haraj?”. The Prophet replied, “Killing! Killing!” (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 88, 183)
Notwithstanding whether we are in those times or not, the fact remains that the frequency of fitnah has increased exponentially since even the last hundred years.
The question is: What should a believer do when faced with trying situations?

Deliberation and patience

Whenever civil strife, killing, or conflict between ethnic or religious groups take place; or an all-encompassing natural disaster destroys tens of thousands of livelihoods and homes, the believer tries to deliberate and slowly take it all in at first.

It was narrated that Al-Zubair Bin ‘Adiyy said: “We came to Anas Bin Malik and complained to him about what we were suffering at the hands of Al-Hajjaj. He said, “Be patient, for there never comes to you a time but what follows it is worse, until you meet your Lord. I heard this from your Prophet (pbuh).” (Sahih Al-Bukhari: 7068)
When fitnah is intense, groups on opposing sides pressurize religious heads and people occupying posts of authority take sides immediately. Silence and deliberation is taken as betrayal; the silent Muslim’s faith and loyalty to Islam is questioned.
It is about such times that the Prophet (pbuh) warned us: Narrated Abu Hurairah, the Prophet (pbuh) said: “There will be fitnah (civil strife) which will render people deaf, dumb and blind regarding what is right. Those who contemplate it will be drawn by it, and giving rein to the tongue during it, will be like smiting with the sword.” (Abu Dawud: Book 30, 4251)

Not taking sides immediately

In obedience to the Prophet’s advice, the cautious Muslim keeps his mouth shut and absorbs the information streaming in from all directions with a clear mind and sound heart. He refuses to react and jump to conclusions on the basis of obscure, conjectural media reports, or inflammatory opinion pieces penned by emotionally charged, hype-seeking journalists.

Not expressing opinions

Often, during civic strife or politically chaotic events, the ever-present, multifaceted, round-the-clock media channels invite all and sundry to express their opinions regarding specific individuals, institutions, governments, convicted criminals or even figures in authority.

Twitter and Facebook become awash with deluges of curse words, abusive language, hate-festering and public denunciation of organizations or individuals, especially rulers and politicians. Whether the stimulus is someone’s conviction for a crime, or the stance of Islamic fiqh regarding the nature of the crime itself, television, radio, online media and even cell phones issue forth discussions, articles, fatwas and heated op-eds.
Confusion, chaos and no less than jurisprudential anarchy result. Difficult though it is, a wise Muslim tries to avoid forming or voicing fixed opinions immediately when he or she hears of an event, as this will cause no benefit; rather, they know that it will just add fuel to the fire.

Turning to Allah 

Since Islam exhorts that one should never jump to conclusions about an event or person unless clear proof or eyewitness accounts exist, a believer as usual, turns to his Lord in earnest dua, or supplication; in dhikr – remembrance of heart and tongue, and in qiyaam – soulful prayers late at night, in order to seek the stance he should take; to beseech the Almighty Allah to make the haqq and baatil, both, become crystal clear to him.

Staying neutral

The times today are such that, while we are still blessed with a multitude of Islamic scholars and people of knowledge, the ‘urf makan – customs of a particular place – vary from place to place, and each scholar is not equipped to give verdicts regarding situations faced by Muslims in another geographical area of the world. Hence, verdicts or fatawa that apply to Muslims at one place might not apply to those in another. This is not taken into account by laymen when they shoot off fatawa from one scholar to counter those given by another during civil strife or war. Result? Confusion and dissension.

The recommended attitude of the common Muslim is that of silence and aversion to rolling off fatawa from the tip of his tongue at the merest of provocations or demands. The role of qualified, expert Islamic scholars and certified muftis should be left to them.
If Muslims adhere to the advice meted out to them by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and by his noble Companions, they’d find peace in their hearts and relief from the distress caused by frequent and varying tribulations, or fitan.
The Prophet (pubh) said, “Whoever among you lives (for a long time) will see many dissensions. I urge you to follow my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided Caliphs who come after me. Hold on to it firmly…” (Musnad Ahmad, 4/126) and Al-Tirmidhi, 2676)
